Car wax to many might seem like an aesthetic luxury or a way to make a vehicle look extra shiny after a wash, but car waxing has a much more important purpose. It does, make the car look nice, yes, but it also protects the vehicle’s paint work and can even help improve the resale value if carried out regularly. The process involves applying a layer of  wax all over the exterior of the car, then working it into the paintwork before buffing off, creating a uniform, sealed layer on the surface of the vehicle. But how exactly does this protect a car?

Protection from Water

Although water is something that vehicles come into contact with most days, especially in winter months, it can be damaging to paintwork and can cause fading, oxidation and even corrosion after repeated exposure. On a non-waxed vehicle, water droplets spread out, forming a sheet that clings to the paint ever so slightly and increasing the possibility of  damage. However, on a vehicle that has car wax applied, water will bead up and runoff, as wax is hydrophobic meaning the paintwork repels the water,

Protection from Sunlight

Just like water, sunlight is something cars have to contend with on a daily basis and UV rays can cause fading and reduced colour saturation over time. Sometimes, if sunlight repeatedly hits the same area of a vehicle when it’s parked up, this can even result in a section being a different colour from the rest of the car. Car wax though contains reflective properties thanks to the shiny surface it creates and the naturally occurring oils in the product.
